Getting around but moving on from Rock Sound

When we initially went to Rock Sound our plan was ride out some impending bad weather there and enjoy all the resources for cruisers in Rock Sound. But after getting to Rock Sound we decided it might be better to move on sooner than planned.

Rock Sound offers nearly all round security except that it is a wide open Bay that would give wind a long way to build waves in any direction. When we were there the prevailing southeasterly wind caused significant chop making it uncomfortable. The water was also murky from silt on the bottom and though the anchor was dug in the bottom did not offer assurances that it was good holding. The forecast for storms with high clocking winds seemed to make this anchorage undesirable although there are probably worse places to ride out the weather.

The forecasted highest winds would come from the east and northeast so we wanted an anchorage with good protection from those locations and we wanted a place where we could enjoy the stay. From our quick walkabout there didn't seem to be much to do in Rock Sound although it had some good resources for provisions and parts. So we decided to move on to Governors Harbor which was a bit further up the coast; well protected from the north and east; had marina moorings; good resources; pleasant scenery; and a central location to visit other points on the island.

In the anchorage and just behind us was an Island Packet 380 just like our old boat named Free Spirit. So we stopped by and chatted with them and invited them over for happy hour Saturday night.

So we wanted to make the most of our time in Rock Sound but before we left the boat we made a reservation for a mooring with the French Leave Marina In Governors Harbor which turned out to be a great move.

During the day we walked around the town, visited stores for provisioning and chatted with other cruisers.  We also talked with the folks from Free Spirit and they decided to follow us up to Governors Harbor and made a mooring reservation. After our walk we stopped for lunch and then back to the boat.

Rock Sound looks like a place where some folks stay for a while but with nothing to really keep us there it made sense to move ahead of the weather.
