Exploring Governors Harbor

After bouncing around after getting on our mooring the wind shifted and the anchorage became very comfortable. The weather forecast for Monday was rain arriving in the afternoon so we went out to do some provisioning and walk about the town.

Governors Harbor had far more resources than most of the places we had visited recently and the mail boat was due on Tuesday. But this area of Eleuthera has several resorts and a more vibrant commercial district because of more tourists. Since it had been the first capital of the Bahamas there are many colonial-style homes and remnants of an important past. Some of the scenes from the town are below.

A home being renovated.

Looking to the ocean.

The Buccaneer Club.

Like most of the Bahamas the streets are narrow and here there are hills to go over. Many of the homes were beautifully kept with lush landscaping and fresh paint. Gone were the lower island towns of one story bungalows as most of the homes on Buccaneer Hill were 2-story with gardens and ornamental trees in abundance. From the top of Buccaneer Hill both the ocean and the sound are visible.

After visiting some stores and walking about we went to Da Perk for a relaxing lunch. We then headed back to the boat and got in just as it began to rain and rain it did. At times it rained so hard the other boats were obscured from view.  It continued raining through the evening. In the end I pumped out close to 7" of water from the dinghy. So the boat and dinghy finally got a good fresh water rinse to get the salt off.

We're looking forward to Tuesday and having our car to travel the island and visit Harbor Island.
